Event Reports SCOTNEY CASTLE - December 2005Around 9 members attended our task at Scotney Castle. We
were put to work at the rear of the new house in an area visible from
the rear garden terraces. Our job was to clear some elder, scrub, brambles and
evergreens around an outdoor pool that had been built in the mid
50s or thereabouts. The Trust's gardener explained the outlaying farmland had been
landscaped for specific views from the house and that the trust
is undertaking a gradual process of restoring some of the views.
The evergreens and other scrub we took out would have been removed
under normal management once the slower growing cover had it
estabilished itself .
<> A huge fire was built up in the adjoining field and we were later joined cows with an apparent lack of concern at self roasting in their quest to eat some of the vegetation being thrown on the fire. A few of us took it upon our selves to fell a rotten tree
precariously intertwinned with a large oak tree and a bit too close to
what would have been the "wooden village bus stop" changing room for
the pool. (Bruce) ![]()
